SearchLocal: From One Test Commercial to a Three-Video Campaign

SearchLocal initially hired me to produce one 30-second commercial as a paid test. After approving the first delivery, the client commissioned two more commercials and expanded the work to include voiceover updates, reusable campaign assets, and file-conversion support.

PROJECT GROWTH

From a test project to repeat paid work

1 paid test video became 3 completed commercials, plus additional voiceover and file-conversion support, and 5.0 client feedback.

More work has been discussed but is not yet presented as confirmed.

The brief

SearchLocal was producing a larger series of 30-second streaming TV commercials and wanted to test additional video producers.

The client supplied the scripts, product direction, platform materials, and a rough reference. They did not want another illustrated explainer. The goal was a cleaner commercial style using believable local-business scenes, platform visuals, strong pacing, motion graphics, voiceover, sound, and a clear promotional ending.

I reviewed the available concepts, recommended a direction, and proposed a production process covering storyboarding, visual generation, editing, motion graphics, sound, and final delivery.

The challenge

Each commercial had only 30 seconds to introduce a business need, communicate a product benefit, show enough of the platform, and finish with a clear call to action.

The work also needed to combine several visual layers without feeling disconnected:

SearchLocal also needed to change promotional codes and campaign messages later. The final delivery therefore had to support the client's in-house editing workflow, not only provide a locked final export.

My role

I handled the commercials from planning through final delivery.

The production approach

The commercials followed one basic rule: show the local-business situation first, then introduce SearchLocal as the clear next step.

Rather than opening with a long platform explanation, each video uses short visual beats to establish the need, introduce the platform, show selected features, and close with a direct campaign message.

  1. Align on the direction. Reviewed the script, existing platform, visual reference, audience, and intended commercial style.
  2. Plan the 30-second structure. Turned the script into a shot plan with clear visual beats for the problem, product, features, and offer.
  3. Build the visual assets. Created and selected business scenes, product-interface elements, campaign graphics, and supporting visuals.
  4. Animate and edit the product story. Combined platform motion, generated scenes, typography, voiceover, music, and sound into one continuous commercial.
  5. Review and deliver. Checked pacing, interface readability, brand consistency, voice timing, CTA clarity, output settings, and reusable campaign files.

The three commercials

The engagement resulted in three separate 30-second commercials, each focused on a different part of the SearchLocal offer.

A feature-led commercial showing how local businesses can use platform tools often associated with larger companies.

Built for more than one export

SearchLocal needed promotional messages and codes to change across campaigns. I prepared clean Full HD end-card assets and reusable files so the client's in-house team could update the final campaign message without rebuilding the entire commercial.

The result

What began as one paid test became a three-commercial engagement.
